How to Grow Eggplants in A Garden For High Yield

Eggplant is a member of the potato and tomato family and is native to the West Indies. Eggplants are not an easy vegetable to grow, while homemade eggplants are so flavorful and have a strong aroma, much more so than store-bought ones.

The egg-shaped fruit can be white or purple, with the purple varieties having the best flavor. They are very popular in some parts of the world and can be easily cooked, the musaka dish does not taste authentic without this delicious and must-have ingredient.

Sow the seeds in compost trays in February or March. After germination, the temperature must be kept at the same level. Prick seedlings when they have put at least several leaves into pots or containers where they will grow until ready to transfer to larger pots. Seedlings from February should be ready to be transferred in May.

If the plants are to be moved outdoors, they must first be hardened off, so the temperature should be gradually reduced.

Wait until May before putting them outside, then all frost should be over and the days should be warmer. Water the plants well, it is particularly essential in hot climates, in dry climates, and water especially around the roots to avoid blossom end rot.

By the time the brinjal plants reach 40cm tall, they will need to have their growing tips pinched off to get the side shoots out.

The plants will likely need some support as the weight of the fruit could break the stems, Bamboo stakes can be helpful to support the weight, but care must be taken not to tie the stems too tightly so as not to damage them. .

Make sure the twine or raffia isn’t too tight so you don’t cut the stem as it grows. The best method is to wrap the bamboo with twine or raffia twice, then place a loop around the stem, carefully securing it loosely.

For good-sized fruits, limit the number to a maximum of four per plant. To do this, pinch off all the late-forming flowers. Eggplants are usually ready to harvest in August.

Always cut the fruits off the plant and never try to pull or unscrew them as this will often cause them to break and damage the plant, Be careful as there are thorns around the stem of the plant.
